The art of buying for the executive

What to buy the person who supposedly has everything has long been a challenge for many. When a hard-to-shop-for person happens to be executive with a personal expense account exceeding the amount most of his or her underlings make in a year, finding the right executive gift can be a difficult task-if not a laborious chore.

What exactly can you get for executive types? For one thing, you can stop trying to wow them with some elaborate gift. They're unlikely to be impressed. So you should try to be original and practical when making a purchase. If the executive on your gift list is an avid golfer, then why not get him or her a set of golf clubs with his or her name engraved on the clubs?

You can also focus on getting the type of gifts that many people find practical but probably wouldn't go out of their way to get for themselves. Paper shredders fit the bill. They're handy and do a good job at shredding confidential documents that must be kept out of the wrong hands. But most executives are more likely to rip up documents manually rather than buy themselves a paper shredder. So they'll be grateful to finally get their hands on one of those machines. You can also get some them some personalized fountain pens-a nice gift that they'll likely appreciate for a long time. Can you name one executive who doesn't use a pen?
